Qld Obesity Prevention Strategy

Health and Wellbeing Queensland (HWQld) recently announced that Queensland’s new strategy to prevent, reduce and treat obesity has been released.  Making Healthy Happen 2032 is the state’s comprehensive and forward-thinking response to the National Obesity Strategy 2022–2032

We were pleased to play a small part in the development of the Strategy and its initial Action Plan through some qualitative research as part of the third phase of engagement. In January 2023, our team conducted a series of focus groups with regional Queenslanders, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, younger adults, and males. These focus groups explored language considerations to decrease weight stigma and enhanced the approach taken in the Strategy to address obesity at a systems level. Insights from the earlier phases of consultation were fed into the design of the focus groups, informing the approach taken and the key areas for further exploration in terms of language used and understanding reactions to proposed system changes.

The full Making Healthy Happen 2032 Strategy, Action Plan, Change Framework and summary of the approach taken can be found on the HWQld website here.
